Do you believe that ordering from a tablet in the form of a menu instead of relying on a waiter is going to be widely implemented in the future?

Some restaurants are now providing customers with tablets (iPads) to make their orders instead of relying on a waiter to come and take the order. This also means that they are no longer providing traditional menus since the menus are available electronically on the tablets.

Do you think it's a smart idea for restaurant owners to implement this technology? Why or why not?

  1. Ordering with a tablet makes everything easy for the guests and the waiter,if everything is saved on the tablet ,if a customer orders something that is out of stock u can quickly tell the guest that same time.
  2. The orders goes to the kitchen within seconds
  3. It is a very smart idea, bare in mind we are in the 21st Century

3 reasons tablet ordering system

1. Cost. First, the cost of labor will increase because server tips will decrease. Restaurant operators are responsible for paying employees minimum wage if they are not There are not making the required amount through tips.

2. Damaging the Brand Experience. When a restaurant uses a tablet for ordering, they are no longer known for the unique cuisine, exceptional staff, or tasty drinks.

3. Unpredictability. Guests have no way of knowing how busy the kitchen is, and on a busy Friday or Saturday night, multiple orders coming into the kitchen at the same time could bog down the kitchen for the entire night and ruin many guest’s meals.

Digital menus are a good thing if the following applies :

- your target market is digitally savvy

- type of menu you wish to digitize. It is far more useful to digitize a wine menu for instance and allow guests to compare different wines from different regions and look up for ratings in just a few clicks away

- your operation is large enough to require the need of digital menus which are fully integrated with ordering process in the aim of having a faster service

- you have the budget to implement the project and keep up with upgrades and updates

- you have the know how to maintain and keep the information up to date as menus are a living document

There does seem to be the push by restaurants and retailers to automated tellers. but I think in the long run, they will turn to rely on humans rather than the technology. The use of the technology is a bit of a fad for now, but people are social animals and as such the consumer will demand the return of the human touch to such transactions.

I think it is one of the worst effect of technology on our daily life routin, I worked as a waiter and am as well a client so when I want to order something I would love to find someone who could tell me everything about the chef, the kitchen, and the ingredients the human contact is a must in this situation. And for a restaurant owner this kind of technology will ruin his business the waiter is a must in the restaurant the one thing that the tablets can't do is when the waiter talking about a certain type of food or a restaurant specialty the sparkles and the appetising look in his eyes will never be found in the tablets. I will give you an example : am a waiter I give the client the menu and I notice his having a discussion with his companion about the fish and she is hesitating in this case I will rush into the kitchen, bring the fish plate and when they will see it they will certainly by it even if it is expensive, that my friend technology will never be able to do.

Well , today is the age of science and technology but we should use this in its own path not every where. We use to place order for food online as well sitting at home , but in restaurants we should implement the same traditional way , introducing smart way of ordering food with in the restaurants will effect the decorum as well.

We have to terminate our working team members then.

Yes, I think ordering from tablets is the future especially since there is a written record of the specifications that you want from your dish. It makes sense to have something more concrete than just the waiter's memory.

it's smart idea for restaurant if :

the customer can fast and easy download the application of restaurant using QR barcode for example , the application menu must be easy to use for all type of customers ,

it must be integrated 100% with back office solution and other hardware like kitchen printers and monitors and customer can pay using NFC technology .
