Its 50-50 some procurement skills help generically in all industries, however, the industry knowledge helps in performing better negotiations and directing queries to the right suppliers and saves unnecessary waste of  time.

Yes I agree, because the professional procurement in generic will be able to understand and work within any different industry easily, because the concept is the same whatever the industry and you can adapt your professionalism once you join new company and deal with new products.

This is from my long experience since I deal to move to different industry easily

yes, procurement profession is of generic nature in the sense that procurement department acts on material requisitions provided by requesting departments and follows the procurement standard procedures but specific industry knowledge may help. However, before finalizing the purchase orders, meetings can be arranged with technical project manager (and joint meeting with supplier)  to discuss and finalize specifications conforming to requirement if required and even a review of draft purchase order by project team may be important sometimes to satisfy the technical requirement

Partly true. Being successful in procurement profession requires more of a certain talent, psychology, intelligence, attitude, versatility, adaptability than specific knowledge. However, it will be easier for an engineer to buy engineering related categories, for a marketing professional to buy marketing categories etc

Thanks for invitation.  Procurement process is generic. But to become an expert procurement officer, knowledge of industry and product is quite important. Procurement of electronic parts or Drilling rig for petroleum extraction electrical machinery or construction materials requires a thorough knowledge of the industry or product.

To be very general, an efficient procurement will be able to grasp the knowledge of industry and product very quickly. So, though the procurement process is generic  but to be be successful, the procurement officer need to acquire the knowledge of industry and product .
