What is food safety supervisor?

Every licensed food business is required to have a food safety supervisor. New food businesses are required to notify Council within30 days of the issue of their license. A food safety supervisor is required to take a lead role in supervising food safety in the licensed food business. Apart from holding the required competencies, they must: have the ability to supervise food handling practices in the food business be reasonably available at all times the food business is operating have the authority to supervise and give instructions to food handler

A food safety supervisor is a person nominated by the owner of a class1 or class2 food premises to ensure safe food handling and hygiene practices are followed in the workplace. The food safety supervisor must:

  • have the knowledge and authority to be able to supervise other people handling food in the business
  • know how to identify a hazard
  • take reasonable steps to ensure that the food business is free from hazards
  • have completed accredited food safety training for the food sector that they are currently working in.
  •  Food Safety Supervisor needs to be trained in certain nationally recognised units of competency and hold a FSS certificate.
