Negotiation is called as such because it is the art of GIVE & TAKE

Resiliency is needed just as much as trying to find a compromise

WIN / WIN is the goal

LOSE / LOSE is no solution

WIN / LOSE or LOSE / WIN will not work

Therefore be ready to be SOFT but RATIONAL

Area where you cannot give away certain merits needs bemet with what you MUST give away as a sign of POSITIVE GESTURE & GOODWILL :-))

Negotiations require flexibility, being rigid, selfish or having egoism doesn't help much. The idea resultant status is win-win situation, therefore all parties must show interest & willingnes to be flexible for the best results. Thanx for the invitation

Negotiations as the name suggest should be flexible, when you have an offer you are trying to negotiate, you have a pre-meeting with your team to suggest limits on negotiations. 

As in, when you are trying to sell an operating and maintenance contract to a third party, you agree on not going less than a 25% discount. So you start by offering a 10% discount to get the negotiation process started, so when the prospect starts making points the whole negotiation will probably end on 20%.
