Since consumer here is used in a general term not a specific group, and since advertisements is not specified to a precise media, then in general, advertisement (sales of an item or a service) target the human mind (senses and instincts); a rule of thumb is, that every dollar you make there are about 10,000 people trying to take it away from you.

They use:

  • Fear which is very effective advertisement method-“The germs will kill you- but my product will save you”.

  • Sex is another very effective visual advertisement to manipulate you to by a product- “use this product and this girl you see will be attracted to you”.

  • Cravings almost everyone in the world is familiar with McDonald, so why does McDonald spend billions on advertising? It’s simple, they want to remind you to get up and go eat;  they usually place their ads during certain times which are based on an analytical study of the area and people’s feeding times.

  • Music & visual effects a catchy tune will trigger a memory of a particular product that pushes you to seek that product. Water bottles are always clear or light blue color; this is done on purpose, since fresh clean water has clear or light blue visual effects which are imbedded in our primitive layer of our brain; some water brands lost because they used red color label.

There are many other mind manipulation techniques used by the successful advertisement agency, depending in the country or the group targeted; they use the help of top psychologists and market analysts, to come up with a specific profile and adopt special techniques that will effectively manipulate that group.

Consumers usually tend to be largely non-experimentative. Think about it yourself. How many times have you changed your preferred brand of soft drink or shaving razor or lipstick or toothpaste? This is because at some point, consumers formed an opinion about a set of products/brands - be it positive or negative, and accordingly reinforce the perception each time they consume or do not consume the product!

This is where great advertising comes in, to stop the consumer in their tracks, engage, inform and delight them with an artfully crafted message which leads the consumer to re-consider and re-form their opinion and product choices thus leading the consumer to change their behaviour.

Through touching what people feel, this might be a cliche but it's the truth. When you find people needs and provide a product that cover that need, you change people's perspective.
