The TRAINING won't become less effective instead the more number of TRAINEES means more variation in their interest levels. Some will be very serious on their approach, some causal and some just attend for heck of it.
The lesser crowd the interest levels can be changed easily
The selection of a training method should be based on the desired level of learning, not the number of people in the audience. It makes no difference whether there are 30 or 500 audience members. If comprehension is the desired level of learning, the trainer must use a training method that will give the audience an opportunity to demonstrate their comprehension.
The larger the audience, the less effective the training becomes. This is because the training is less targeted.
For example, if you are training one person, the training is based on their pre-existing knowledge and proceeds at the fastest pace at which they can learn effectively. If you are training 100 people at once you must assume some sort of average knowledge base and proceed at the average speed. This means some people will not understand because they don't have sufficient background, others will be left behind, and others will disengage because they are bored.
This is even before you get into areas like learning style (visual, aural, etc.)
The increase in the number of trainees market affects negatively to understand and absorb some of the participants. Because if it becomes a little number that can allow them to participate and share examples and questions.
Learning effectiveness is the key factor to consider when you consider the class size. Typically in an experiential learning setup, where people work in groups its ideal to maintain the limit to 25-30 people in a class, organized in groups of 5-6. This way the individuals learn from each other, bring their own skills and knowledge to the discussion and learning dissemination becomes effective.
Facilitator interaction with the class is yet another important factor. This is a key input to the overall learning impact that the program can create for the participants. Therefore the primary focus should be not to burden the class instructor with a large class as the program quality and learning objectives would be hampered.

This is sort of a generalized statement. There are trainings for which large audiences are needed and do not convey message to attendees.Training large groups can be very effective, notably if at the start some sub-division can be put into place.
Less audience less distraction with less possibilities of lack of interest level from them.
Large audiences definitely limit the effectiveness of a training class! It is always important to maintain an ideal batch size for better trainer-trainee engagement, better audience participation and smoother learning!
