Water hammer (also waterhammer) is a pressure surge that can arise in any pumping system that undergoes an abrupt change in its rate of flow and usually results from pump starts and stops, the opening and closing of valves, or water column separation and closure. These abrupt changes can cause all or part of the flowing water column to undergo a momentum change. This change can produce a shock wave that travels back and forth between the barrier that created it and a secondary barrier. If the intensity of the shock wave is high, physical damage to the system can occur.
pressure applications. We had this problem , when installing the Gas chlorine system in Khoramashar-Port.
shock wave passing down the pipe as a result of a sudden flowrate change. The most common cause is a valve closing too quickly, or a pump tripping or starting up suddenly. This causes a shock wave which starts at the valve or pump and passes along the pipe, changing the fluid velocity as it goes.
Occurs when a tap is turned off a briskly. This can to damage the valve.
Water Hammer is an oscillating pressure waves generated in liquid being pumped through a pipeline during starting and stopping of the pumps
the effect of it on the system depend on pipeline length, diameter, thickness and material and liquid characteristics
Sudden thrust of in and out of the pipe causes water hammer generally the pump room for either chilled water or water supply pump comes with and expansion tank which usually dampens the effect of hammering.
