Setting good examples are the common motivations to subordinates. A boss that shows enthusiasm with a task and display a full knowledge of it, or perform the job (just to show how it is done) promotes respect from subordinates therefy motivates them as well.
Motivating my staffs doesn't take a lot of flare. It could only require me to spare time from my schedule to say "hi" and communicate them better to empower them by offering opportunities for advancement and I set myself as an example. I will let them know that I trust them by being transparent for their chance to ask questions and feedback.
I can encourage them to work hard by showing them a clear picture of the organisation's objectives and their duty. Also, make them recognise the incentives and rewards planned for their achievement equivalent.
Provide him/her challenging tasks and recognize their efforts for the job well done either through personal appreciation, promotion or increment.

Create a pleasant work environment and reward your employees when thye perform well.
