Once you are on the very final shortlist, it is pure luck as to whether you get hired or not. To get onto that final shortlist, you need to:
- not be unlucky
- satisfy the personal prejudices of the interviewers
- meet the requirements of the relevant internal politics
- answer ALL of the interview questions correctly
- be able to demonstrate that you can do the job
- be liked by the interviewers within 4 seconds of entering the room
Note that whether or not you can actually do the job - or even do it well - is not in this list.
Sometimes a candidate is liked by the interviewer and is clearly a good candidate, but for some reason is not quite suitable for this particular role.
A mixture of education, knowledge, charisma, experience, first impression, and personal appearance.
Answering a good answer will help too, the perfect correct answer only means that you have an insider who's giving you the answers, or that you are overqualified.
The way you sit, stand, where do you keep your hands, and body language counted too.
Short listing, is the process where the employer review all applicants, choose the one that meet the requirement, test them, choose the ones that scored top 10 or to 20, interview them, then chose the first one or more depending on how many vacant positions available.
Actually it depends on the following factors.
1) Sometimes , company management need to close this job vacancy due to some reason.
2) Even you are a good technical resource . However , the manager who will manage you may be he or she would not be comfortable with your soft skill.
3) It is most likely possible that you are being hired and in the same duration some other person was selected with the similar skills which you have.
4) Interview for the future vacancy.
5) Company budget is not matched with your demand.
However , it is totally depend on your luck. In my personal experience , I got the job offer after9th month of the final interview.
A good response from the Interviewer is a good indicator that your interview went fine. But, it's not the only indicator. Let's understand this with an example. When you cook food, the smell of your food tells you if it is good or not. But sometimes, food that smells good doesn't taste good and vice-versa. Similarly, your performance in the interview is one part of the equation and the other parts maybe - management approvals, budget constraints, communication gaps, changes in reporting lines, business performance, financial viability, business decisions, and so on. Hope you can see the bigger picture now?
