it over loads managers, but it's always useful, it helps a lot in tracking the performance of the team members, and finding solutions in how to improve their abilities.

My feeling is that one should not evaluate personal performance, but process performance.
Personal performance may degenerate on policing or persecution process, which is totally adverse to the company worker's interest.
Companies should be run in terms of efficiency measurement of the processes that they're engaging with, this is the necessary information that allows management to move workers from one department to another, cut on expenses or make investments.

Personal Performance Indicator (PPI)  The BIGGEST - BEST - POWERFUL - REAL - ECONOMICAL asset, an organization can ever-possess is its MAN-POWER!!!  As such, the SUCCESS or FAILURE, of an organization purely depends on the VALUE it accords to its man-power at all times!  Success is not possible at all without empowering its man-power at all levels.
Measurement of Personal Performance Indicator is a best TOOL in deciding how-much a person can be EMPOWERED with!  PPI measurement is a continuous process.
After empowering, how the empowerment is utilized is another question.
What are the support the management should delegate to make that empowerment effective should also be analyzed.
Alongwith empowerment, there has to be CHECK-n-CONTROL factor to ensure that such empowerment does not lead to misuse at any time.
Counter-AUTO-audit should be in place to EXPLORE maximum possitive utilities from such empowerment.
Because of all these factors, LARGE ESTABLISHMENTS, therefore, use PPI as an effective tool.

i think it depends on the business, for a sales environment i think it is def needed: it would motivate the bottom producers to do better and it would also encourage consistency.
it will also let the manager know who needs to work with more and if they are a great fit for the team
