Modern business management functions can be broadly divided into six functions i.e. forecasting, planning, organizing, commanding, coordinating and controlling. All of these functions are essential for a successful manager. Through which function do you think a successful business manger can make highest and lasting impact on his/ her teams and how?
In my opinion,Leader or manager set an example with an exemplary behavior, knowledge and expertise. So, if the manager becomes successful because of his/her hardwork, excellent communication and expertise of his/her field then obviously, it sends a very positive message to all his/her subordinates and the people around him/her. But, as we all know, there is a term called " Organizational politics". So, if a manager is successful because of having excellent connections with the top management or having attachment with the powerful body in the organization then, it will surely sends a negative message to his/her subordinates.
This comes through top to down management layer. CEO defines the organization goals and other function leads manage the business and technology needs.
As far as i am concerned, a good leader sets positive examples and knows how to use their strengths to help their team achieve goals. Successful managers get to know their employees and find ways to support them so they produce their best work. It's important to consistently communicate clear goals, expectations and feedback to your team. So, managers are expected to motivate employees to help them achieve their goals and objectives assigned to them. Leading and motivation are key roles. Instead, planning also involves setting objectives in advance and put forward a goal which is to be achieved within a stipulated time.
To achieve all the goals, there is a last function but not the least that needs to be used which is Controlling. Here, controlling is the most important of the four management functions. It provides the information that keeps the corporate goal on track. By controlling their organizations, managers keep informed of what is happening, what is working and what is not working and also what needs to be going on, what can be improved or changed.

I don't think any manager can sustain long time any team but a Leader can. So the person should have leadership qualities.
