What progressive approach should be used to improve Data Centre Operations Management ensuring that investment in the Data Centre is safe-guarded?

Many organizations have come to realize that without having adequate processes and maintenance programs, the availability levels are at high risk. What decisions could seriously impact and “erode” the investment made in the Data Centre facility?

Temperature Control

(ASHRAE) decision to broaden its recommended range for data center temperatures from 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit to 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Humidity Control

Data centers work hard to combat heat. They probably work even harder to keep humidity under control. Bigger facilities use a gaggle of CRAC units to create a consistent airflow that streams throughout the room. These systems generally work by pulling in and cooling heat, then pushing it out as cold air through the vents and intakes that lead to the servers. ASHRAE recommends a dew point level range of 41.9 degrees Fahrenheit to 59 degrees Fahrenheit with a maximum relative humidity of 60 percent.

Static Electricity Monitoring

Unknown to many, static electricity is one of the biggest threats in the data center environment, an invisible nuisance you likely won’t see or hear coming. In fact, the sensitive components in common IT equipment, particularly newer harder, can be damaged or completely fried by less than 25 volts of discharge. If this problem isn’t addressed, it might result in frequently dropped calls, system crashes, and even data corruption. Luckily there is equipment available to monitor static electricity. These systems should be strategically installed in locations where charges are potentially the largest.

Data should be with company and can be safe and secure. Ofcourse maintanance cost may increase but due to digitalisation of company can reduce it cost. Also it can be an asset to company.

Its is understandable that the equipment installed in existing data centres are not easy to change or replace as per the changing tecnology trends unless it is really needed to change so.

So for existing setup all that can be done is review HVAC load because to% of the entire load in any facility is due to HVAC machines power consumption only. So periodically(ideally monthly) perform and review DCiE & PUE calculations which is one of the most popular ways to review data centers efficiency.

Also energy audits can be internally performed in addition to timely preventive maintenance of existing HVAC setup; other thing that can be done is select a baseline with reference to the current consumption trends and select percentage of load that can be reduced in the next year. Identify lightning loads etc are other factors that can be easily optimized by switching to energy efficient LED's.

As rightly mentioned by AbdulRahman in thread that keep hawk eye on Static Electricity which can be fatal if not controlled due to highly humidty controlled environment

HVAC to be monitored 24x7 and the IT assets in DC can't be changed/replaced as quickly as the tehnology changes, hence preventive maintenance on all IT assets on scheduled manner ( such au firmware upgrades / repairs/replacement of faulty assets) to be conducted on regular intervals.
