By saying "you have to loose money in order to make money" does not mean sense. I think it's be better saying, "you must invest by taking more risk in order to make money". Do business doesn't necessarily imply loosing money.
Yes in beginning of any new business and product introduction to market we may need to provide free samples or demonstration of product to make client feel safe to buy the product and he should be confident about product quality and reliability so this can be added benefit for making good revenues in future....
If product is already well known then there is no need of investing in marketing and promotions in such extent.
I agree with Mr. Ashraf's word change "investing" instead of 'Losing".
Thanks for invitation,
Agree with the answer of Mr. Simon, just I would prefer to rewording the question to replace the word "investing" instead of "lose" money to be more accurate.

I'd say that this statement is applied to any sphere of life, you just have to interpret it differently. For me, this statement has a clear meaning for trading - you need to give something to receive even more, and I follow this rule. It was hard for me to trust unknown websites, but I'm glad I managed to find this page because I didn't get scammed, and I use it to this day to make money.
Thanks
Yes, that is be applied in abundance in marketing methods, when we paying money for marketing campaignes to get more customers then more money
