In my opinion, at the beginning of every conversation and in order to protect yourself anyway, you need to say the " you have limit time ...."
So, if you win your conversation so you can finish it at anytime, or if you loss it you can withdrawing since you have not enough time to finish it. BUT do not forget to let this conversation and others as open end conversation, prepare your evidences and re- your conversation again just if you are sure that you will win this time.

Before starting any conversation you must have the objective as well as pros and cons clarity. Same time, you can make it time binding too, once you feel that you are loosing control or conversation may put you on back foot then you may close it tactfully, nicely, softly and if possible put on for other time to regain the control.

Frankly excusing yourself is the best but in some cultures it may be frowned upon. Pretending to get a call, late for a meeting, or just quitely dissaperaing if in a group. well it also all depends on the company you are in.
Start listening more.
Show that I am not interested in the subject presented to me, but in a good way.
