To be absolutely blunt and honest. sure. I can give up internet for phone calls. The question asks if i can give it up on my mobile. Doesn't say anything about Ipads and tablets. Keeping internet on those devices is fine if you absolutely need to be connected to the world. (Honestly, in this generation, people have become slaves to it).

What matters is quick communication to get the idea across. The internet is just a medium for sending bulk data to and from people. Yes, I can talk to people about important details and yes its a big problem if we cant transfer files, get news and check out things on the net etc but if you consider all scenarios some of which include business, entertainment, hospitality, life-threatening emergencies etc the phone call seems to get the idea across instantly.

Note: I use a nokia phone which has no internet and can take and receive calls and send/receive messages. No distractions of internet on it. I keep a personal tablet for bulk communication and for getting "updated with the world" as other people have said.

Internet is very important nowadays, it helps the communication more enjoyable and more connections specially to your family.  It also helps business transactions go smoothly specially sending and receiving data.  However, I would not give up phone calls either as at times internet connection is not always available.

I don't think anyone can give up phone calls. Yes! If phone has some issues and not repairable than yes will use it to connect with internet as for social apps you need internet to talk to your loved ones.
