VMware VMotion support the live migration of running virtual machines from one physical server to another with no downtime. You can perform this migration only between hosts in the same datacenter that are managed by a vCenter Server system. You must power off a virtual machine to move it to a different datacenter.
vMotion for live VMs
Cold migration for powered off VMs
1.V2V is preferred type to migrate VM online with minimum downtime to upgrade VMtool and version of Virtual machines after online migration , minutes downtime involved to reboot server after all required upgrade like VMtool, Hardware version and patches etc.. This can be Host or Storage or both HOST/Storage migration in to different host without any data and resiliency loss of server .
2. Cold or offline migration is2nd approach we can use if app owner wants to migrate it offline for safety concern
Below are types of mighration which we can use:
Cold
Suspended
vMotion
You can move a virtual machine to another host and move its disks or virtual machine folder to another datastore. With vMotion, you can migrate a virtual machine and its disks and files while the virtual machine is powered on.
You can perform vMotion in environments without shared storage. Virtual machine disks or contents of the virtual machine folder are transferred over the vMotion network to reach the destination host and datastores.
To make disk format changes and preserve them, you must select a different datastore for the virtual machine files and disks. You cannot preserve disk format changes if you select the same datastore on which the virtual machine currently resides.
Vmware Vsphere provideds an incredibility feature knowns as Vmotion & storage Vmotion which helps live migrate a Virtual machine from host to host securely without powering off or causing any lost of data.
However, the types of migration In vmware depends upon the current state of a VM. Below are few types of migratation that can be recall.
Cold Migration
Migrating a Suspended Virtual Machine
Migration with vMotion
Migration with Storage vMotion
vmotion is the optin to migrate a vm to nother host and there are two types of migrations, cold and live migration.
Basically VM migration are of two type:
Cold Migration: which means as the word says "Cold" in the sense power off the vm and move the vm to another host which is manual work
Live Migration: which means migrating a vm from one host to another while the vm is still running and powered on by using a vmware technology called Vmware vMotion.
VCentre is used in VMware to migrate a vm from one host to another.
VMware Virtual machine migration means moving a virtual machine from one host, datastore, or vCenter Server to another host, datastore, or vCenter Server. We perform these activities for Workload balancing, or as part of preparations to avoid downtime during activities like server maintenance, site level switch-over
