If you have ever found yourself working really hard on a project, only for it to "hit the buffers" simply because a powerful manager or influencer says "No"? It is likely that you should recheck who your stakeholders are. Are they truly decision makers, or noisy by standers? Stakeholder management is key to the PERCEPTION of how the project is running.
Identify the key stakeholders. Once that is done, make them accountable to manage their own staff to cut down on “noise”
Make sure the stakeholders have the power, jurisdiction, influence, interest in the project in question. Define them as key stakeholders – produce a document that identifies them as such – if anyone is then subsequently missed off, they are accountable too.
This is all about getting the right people on board with you for the successful delivery of the project – so that details like budget, scope , timeline for delivery and their expectations of a successful delivery can be met.
Communication is key with the stakeholders – regular updates are key, to keep them informed – no one likes surprises, so manage the stakeholders accordingly, keeping them in the know.
