Being a teacher does not always end in the four corners of a classroom, however if the school I am currently employed in has rules not allowing tutoring or mentoring children outside school, I would have to submit to that. As a teacher and model, we are accountable and responsible to always respect and follow rules as this is how we teach our students, to be obedient and to give respect to authorities.

As a volunteer, no I wouldn't. Teachers are already underpaid for what they do in the  classroom, let alone doing free extra time. We are all humans I know, and it is very helpful for the students, but we also as teachers have other responsibilities in life to be answered. If paid, I would do extra tutoring, but as a volunteer, maybe once, but not on a regular basis.

I would definitely volunteered if I had the time to do so, as I really feel obligated to help my students & make them improve.

This depends on the student's focus. It would be good for students who strive to do their best even thou wick in studies but pushing hard to study.

Before becoming a mentor, here are a few things to understand about the role of mentoring. Most of us have had a teacher, supervisor or coach who has been a mentor to us and made a positive difference in our lives. Those people wore many hats, acting as delegators, role models, cheerleaders, policy enforcers, advocates, and friends. Mentors assume these different roles during the course of a relationship, and share some basic qualities:

  • A sincere desire to be involved with a young person
  • Respect for young people
  • Active listening skills
  • Empathy
  • Ability to see solutions and opportunities
  • Flexibility

As a teacher, I believe teaching is a calling and should be approached as such.  Everything should be done in the power of the teacher to make sure that the students learning experience is maximized.  But before volunteering to mentor a student regarding matters outside school, one should make sure if there is a school counselor that may attend to the matter.  Or if the parents are aware of the problem the student is facing.  I would only get partially involved and make use of a multi-disciplinary approach with the help of parents, school counselor, or principal.  An added advantage I might have is that I have studied Psychology and counseling and might be able to do more than just an English teacher, for example.

While I domaster the international techniques of teachning and training (Kolb Cycle & McCarthy). I do believe that those theories are applicable on more thatn 90% of students broasing four (4) categories. But all theories are a huaman product that could be missing something. So any class could contain a students who needs more and special work. As I belive in work on objectives, not scheduled plan only, I do believe that volunteering id sometimes a must
