Both knowledge about the product and client relation is important when it comes to marketing. As we are promoting the product, knowledged about its features and benefits or its advantage will help you to convince the client why they have to purchase the service and or the items. Moreover, even how much we know our product if we dont have the client  relations, it will not make you effective in marketing. Relation with the client or the rapport that we build with them will help us to know them more and  to identify their requirements. And with this relation, client will trust you and the company that they will be taken care of.

As per my experience both things is important, this question is like what is more important to take a walk my left leg or right leg. You have to keep things in balance so that you can Walk or Run as per your need. In marketing you must have the knowledge of products like you have a bond, you trust on this, you understand so this will help your client to trust the product too, and ya your relations after this with your client is most important.
