As an operation manager, part of the key item in having a proper operations management is to identify the priorities and match it against the available resources.

Any key business goals most be given higher attention and resources in ensuring its success that will be reflected in the overall company achievement.

The attention and resources must be provided according to the identified needs of the business goal. It can be in the form of new work process, new procedures, new training program and may also include extra manpower to be assigned to the activity or process.

Overall it can be presented as a matrix to be matched again the prioritized company goal as to analyze the Cost Benefit Analysis 'CBA' of the plan.

The process must be repeated until an acceptable CBA is achieved that will eventually provide the comfort that the plan will be successful and so as the business goal.

It depends on two important capabilities of the Operations' Manager:

  • Be capable of work study and time analysis for the main operations as well as supporting services
  • Be capable of differentiating between the achievers and non achievers

Once the need assessment is done fairly on the basis of item # 1 and then the teams are assessed fairly on the basis of capability # 2, the operation manager has done his job and I haven't seen the idea failing. At the same time, there are very few who possess the above mentioned qualities.

Operations management involves "overseeing, designing, controlling the process of production and redesigning business operations in the production of goods and/or services

Operations management functions differ depending upon the purpose of the organization. In a manufacturing setting such as a factory, operations management would include designing efficient processes to produce the product, timely acquisition of raw materials, insuring adequate numbers of properly trained workers, and proper maintenance of equipment

Operations management in a service setting would focus on insuring that workers are adequately trained, that customer service locations are equipped as needed and are safe for employees and the public, that services are revised as dictated by customer input or competitive forces
