It is used to increase the succes in a bargain procedure when 2 members of the same team play a negative/positive attitude towards the opposite solo negociator.

The word Tactic comes from the Greek word "ΤΑΚΤΙΚΗ" which means that before you enter any nagotiations so that you can avoid the term 'Good Cop/Bad Cop' you have to prepare your home work/facts and choose the tactic you need to follow during negotiations to have a successful deal.

Usually in negotiations tbe person who os open to listen is known as good cop/guy or who os block headed and not willing to negotiate and stucked on a certain point is known as bad cop/ guy. Sometimes it is used in other ways that if you want to blame something wrong happened you put it it on bad cop to proceed further.

If you want to see a funny demonstration of what it is not, watch the movie Pink Panther with Steve Martin playing inspector Clouseau.While he was interrogated a prisoner he played both roles of good cop and bad cop. It dosent work. As your follower have rightly said it happens when 2 members in a team use opposite approaches to attack then support opponents in order to influence their behaviour.

It is a game of convincing where sometimes you try to show the person in front of you that you are at his/her side by placing a story yet you would be the bad guy from inside trying to convince him/her with something else.

 

It is a way to program people to adhere to what you want.
