An inkjet printer works with nozzles that spray tiny microdroplets of ink on the paper. Laser printers work through a combination of heat, toner (dry ink), which is charged (static electricity) to stick to the page. Inkjets tend to be cheaper. Some are free after rebate. Many inkjets are sold on the razor/blade model; printer is sold at a loss, ink is sold at an insanely high profit margin (speaking by the milliter, ink for inkjets is far more expensive than human blood or gasoline). Toner is more expensive, but it's decieving. Ink cartridges last for typically500 pages. Laser toner is more expensive to buy, but it lasts a lot longer- it doesn't dry out, and it prints a lot more (my toner is rated for6000 pages, and judging by my usage, its accurate). The printers are not sold at a loss, so prints are cheap ($.02 per page with a lot of text), and they're faster. Inkjets are better for most home users with occasional printing needs. They are low cost (to buy), print in color (there ARE color lasers, they are much more expensive), simple to use. Lasers are better for people who print a LOT, small businesses, etc.
