Commonly sacrificial anodes are installed on submereged structural members for corrosion protection in seawater. The sacrificial anodes size and material are determined by material / corrosion specialist engineers and included in the structural weight for weight control purposes such as the cases of O&G offshore drilling / production platforms.
Topsides members are treated with corrosion protection paint systems which are periodically inspected and rehabilitated if necessary to a predetermined maintenance program along the service life of the installation. Splash zone members are treated by high-build inert coatings (e.g. glass flakes coatings) for both corrosion protection and where common protection paint quickly deteriorates under mechanical erosion action from wave slams impact forces.
All the above is not within common structural engineering specific specialities but only for interfacing with the material / corrosion discipline specialist during structural design.

Effective cathodic protection
Two Possible Corrosion Mitigation Solutions :
1. Cathodic Protection - Impressed Current or Sacrificial Anode
2. Protective Coatings includes Galvanising

Steel structures in water can be protected by the combination of paintng and cathodic protection. The easy method of CP is sacrificial anodes uing Aluminium, Zinc or magnesium anodes depending on the type of water.
We can protect steel structure from corrosion mainly by three methods,
1-Painting
2-Aluminium coating
3-Cathodic protection
