Ethical journalism concerns the way in which reporters, editors and others provide commentary on the events that shape people’s lives. It is rooted in moral values and has evolved hand in hand with human rights protection,Today journalism is in the midst of crisis. The traditional media, particularly newspapers, suffer not just from the effects of the global economic crisis but also the impact of structural and market changes which have reduced the profitability of media enterprises. In response to these changing fortunes, severe cuts have been imposed in editorial departments that have weakened the quality of journalism. Indeed, many media employers have sacrificed reporting standards in pursuit of commercial objectives.
In these conditions minorities are rendered invisible, their voices unheard; racist and xenophobic messages of unscrupulous politicians are increasingly in play; privacy is breached; there is scant analysis of issues like migration, religious and cultural differences; and little attempt to relieve the anxieties of societies troubled by economic and social dislocation.
The press has two main functions:
The first is to monitor, record and describe the facts and keep them for future generations.
Second: measuring public opinion and the views of different groups and currents on certain historical facts or issues.
Journalism and the task of explanation, interpretation and analysis
It is not only the press that narrates events, but rather analyzes and interprets these events. Many events can not be understood, without knowing the background of these events and their historical development. The press uses several forms of journalism to perform the task of analyzing, interpreting and commenting on events, such as:
■ News Analytics.
■ Editorials.
■ Methods of interpretive coverage.
■ Weekly explanations and summaries of events.
■ sarcastic cartoons.
■ Press campaigns.
►The press and the formation of public opinion Public opinion is the prevailing idea, among an audience of people, who share a common interest in a position, position, or issue of general interest, or interest in common interests. This phenomenon acquires stability and differs in the minds of individuals, But they are based on a mutual agreement between the majority of them, regardless of the extent to which they understand the concept, the value of achieving it for their common benefit, and their common interest. Public opinion in this area is the dominant view.
Public opinion is closely related to cultural heritage; it is called the general trend, the set of customs and traditions, which is a constant trend characterized by permanence, contrary to opinion, a year of movement and change.
There are different factors that interact and eventually lead, to the composition of public opinion, are:
1. Culture or cultural heritage.
2. The process of socialization.
3. Leaders.
4. Accidents.
5. Parties.
6. Media and communication
Journalism has a major impact on people´s actions and behaviour as well as shaping their decision making during elections. Misdirected journalism not providing actual facts but journalist´s opinion and faulty argumentations will lead people in wrong direction, especially when dealing with populism. Poorly educated individuals not understanding even basic rules of macro/micro economy or law will be easily fooled by populist journalism inclining towards a specific politician thus making a wrong decision for the society. The power of voting right is incredibly strong and when supported by misdirected society absorbing information from dishonest journalism is something that will remain a great threat towards a positive change depending on the state of specific society.
