it is very important to know which module your are implementing . if you are going to implement  Inventory module and you need to know your day today stock .

Then system stock as on today from old system should be updated as opening stock . then subsequent transactions can be done. so your old system data is updated and it can be kept in safe place for future reference. it may require for auditing purpose.

Data from the old system is migrated into the new system especially the running general ledger balances

It depends on whether you are upgrading your current System or you are changing your system altogether.

if you are upgrading your existing system with additional features, you may not need to manually enter the existing data while you put additional data in you upgraded system.

And if you are changing the systemaltogether , unless the existing format is supported you will have to manually enter the data.enter them as opening balances.

Ask you System provider, they will help you  migrate safely.

Else you will have the danger of losing data and/or poorly migrating to new system.

In this implementation process, "Le, unless you are paying attention to this example of a traditional system. If necessary, this historical data can be extracted from the old systems for the future.

During implementation, data from the old system is converted to the newer ERP system for historical purposes. It is recommended (in practice) that an organization convert three years of historical data into the new system. Anything older than three years should be stored in a “read only” copy of the old system. If needed, this historical data can be extracted from the old system at a later date. Very importantly here, all data needs to be validated before transfer and to be monitered at each step.
