I think that there must be three fundamental principles to discipline children or adults: 1) consistency between what authority figures say and what they do, 2) perseverance in the discipline purpose and 3) a sense of equity in the disciplinary practice. Without the first, the one who attempts to impart discipline lose credibility. Therefore, his/her norms are disregarded. If there is not perseverance in the discipline purpose, then, the one who tries to discipline suffers from character weakness or he/she does not believe in his/her disciplinary purpose or simply, he/she does not have any purpose at all. Thus, the disciplinary agents, as well as the norm and purpose lose credibility. Lastly, without a sense of equity in the disciplinary practice, the disciplinary practice is perceived as an arbitrary behavior that violates the other's rights. Therefore, that other will look for being reinvindicated for what he/she feels is taken from him or it is denied to him. In any of those cases, people subjected to discipline obey by fear of the punishment or retaliation. However, that fear is ephemeral because sooner than later, everyone learns to manipulate a disciplinary agent who is perceived as dishonest, weak, arbitrary or unfair. To put those principles into practice, working hard in our personal values is a Sine qua non-requirement. That is why is so difficult to educate our children.
