First, do you even know what "mental illness" is as opposed to "mental disease"? Mental illness, using your terminology is like a cold, you get sick and the cold runs its course then you are cured again. But, people today dem mental illness as an "incurable disease" and everyone has to turn their backs and walk away because this person is "crazy"...sound familiar? This is the lack of pure ignorance on everyone's part. Nearly half the world's population has one form or another of "mental illness" and they do not even know they have it. Bipolar disorder, depression, PTSD, dementia are all forms of "mental illness" and yes they are preventable and curable.
You see to answer your question that people who suffer from one form of a mental disorder or another lies within your own society and how "they" look at mental illness. More love would help a great deal and a deeper sense of understanding these conditions through education would go a long way in helping these people. Parkinson's syndrome, Alzheimer's disease, Brain cancer among others are diseases of the brain and not a form of mental illness. Ask your self now how people in the war Syria, the devastation in Puerto Rico will create new patients with mental health issues?
In Afganistan, they lock chains around peoples ankles who suffer from mental disorders caused by war and other such circumstances. In Indonesia, they do the same thing in the remote areas of the country only because they lack the education and tools to help these people. In short, ask your self, how much do you really care about helping these people? Remeber, there is a soul screaming in each and every one of these people just trying to get out and live a normal life again. The answers are there just stop being afraid to care.
For me we should treat every patients with mental illness in a way wherein they can feel and find someone to talk with their problems. They deserves attention yet others sometimes pathetic but as Psychiatry Health Provider we should have the heart to listen and be sensitive enough in order for you to establish their trust and you could probably gain their cooperation in the treatment process.
I think it is largely true and there are several reasons for it. Firstly, mental illnessess are not recognised at many palces and within many societies as physical illnesses. Secondly, there is huge stigma against these illnesses, so much so that people even shy away from talking about it and sharing and discussing these even with their close relatives. Hence peopel who do not have any mental illnesses "want to have nothing with people who have these illnesses". There are places where they are not properly treated, no jobs are given to them, they dont establish relationships or get married, and they keep going down the social spiral. Hence it is very important to educate people about these illnesses, so that the patients get the due attention and treatment.
