Autodesk AutoCAD and Autodesk Revit are the two leading applications of architecture industry in the world. AutoCAD is a world class tool for drafting of interior and exterior of buildings while Revit is a smart solution for creating accurate plans for building information modeling (BIM) for large projects.
You will hear these two applications from architects a lot. So naturally it raises a question that “what are exactly they are?”. Our Revit and AutoCAD Training Institute department decided to put some light on the differences in these two CAD applications in this article in detail.
Define
AutoCAD is widely used commercial software for 2D & 3D Computer Aided Designs (CAD) and drafting.
The AutoCAD application is available since 1982 as a desktop application and since 2010 as a mobile web- and cloud-based app marketed as AutoCAD 360.
Autodesk Revit is Building Information Modeling (BIM) product permitting users to design a building, structure and its elements in 3D, the way to annotate the model with 2D drafting elements and access building information from the building models information.
Industry
AutoCAD is employed across a large range of industries, by architects, project managers, engineers, designers, and different professionals.
Revit software is mainly designed for, structural engineers, architects, designers, MEP engineers, and contractors.
Flexibility
When compared with Revit, AutoCAD is more flexible as you’ve all the surface, mesh and solid commands of AutoCAD.
Revit is stricter; you’ve to do things correctly construction wise as you are building not just a 3D model but also a model that enables you to do coordination of the job and a lot more.
Usability
With AutoCAD you’re working with lines to make basic geometry which represents real life objects.
With Revit you’re working with geometry that’s equipped with real life information. Furthermore, with Revit while you’re operating in one view like a floor plan, alternative views are automatically being generated similarly, like an elevation as an example.
Suitability
AutoCAD is considered best for 2D drawing i.e. where only precise line work is needed, such as elevation detail drawings.
Revit is considered best for modeling, generating cost schedules, collaboration and change management.
AutoCAD is mostly utilized commercial software for 2D and 3D Computer Aided Designs (CAD) and drafting.
Revit is based on BIM platform and facilitates the users to design a building, structure and its element in 3D. Revit is also used to annotate the model with 2D drafting elements and avail building information out of the building models information.
The use of AutoCAD is found among wide industrial areas by architects, project managers, engineers, designers, and different professionals.
Revit software is primarily intended for, structural engineers, architects.
