Because A leader is only successful when his team is successful and for success a motivated team is required.

Is it a must that leader should motivate his subordinate because it his responsibility. If once the subordinate is motivated he can perform his job well and motivated to finish his job within stipulated time. Motivation is not only giving a material incentives. Motivation is can also give by listening to your subordinates idea.

We have a saying don't leave your monkeys in my room. Subordinates should be encouraged and empowered to decide outcomes of issues, this help their confidence and encourages administrative efficiency. Generally subordinates know more about any issue than any one else and are in the best position to seek a successful outcome. This can only be done if leader act as a coach and mentor, with a rewarding not punishing mentality.

In motivating ones subordinates I do believe the key is leading by example and allowing your subordinates to bring in their ideas and solutions. With their contributions coming in we all as a team sit down and work one these ideas and or solutions as the case maybe. The ones that we unanimously agree can work we apply them. When the results come out it is also important to give applaud the person or team that brought the idea or solution to the table and also the team that made it work. I have always believed that inclusion can be a strong motivator.
