Actually there is two ways of recovring Virtual machine VMDK data , First by using vmware-recovry tool and get back entire VMDK data in accessible form.
Second, which is an old way by replacing VMDK pointer (I havent test before ):
- Backup the original VMDK file from VM library
- replace VMDK file for another VM
- save and boot the machine
