You need to ask is what current load the cables need to handle in relation to the size of the battery - this is to determine the minimum thickness of the cables one would require for a specified battery. To determine the thickness of copper cables one needs to do a cable size calculation, according to the maximum load which will help one select the correct cable. For a typical car battery one will use a 8mm copper cable that is suitable to carry the expected load.

Using the maximum expected current generated by a normal car battery, 32A one could use a calculator such as this one here: https://www.omnicalculator.com/physics/dc-wire-size to determine the correct cable size.

from omnicalculator here are the results of this calculation:

Source voltage
12V

Allowable voltage drop (V)
3%

Conductor material
Copper

Current (I)
32A

One-way distance (D)
2m

Maximum wire temperature
75°C

Recommended wire size per cable
Wire gauge
8 AWG

This field is calculated automatically, you cannot change its value manually.
Wire cross-sectional area (A)
7.3
mm²

Wire diameter (d)
3.049
mm

  • Copper battery terminal connectors offer the highest degree of combined electrical conductivity and strength

Brass battery terminals are best used in marine and corrosive environments, while lead battery terminals are much more malleable and easy for the average garage mechanic to work with.

Copper battery terminals are tinned to resist corrosion, and can be easily soldered or crimped.
