As I understand the question: It means there is always room for an improvement in your area of expertise at work. Gradually with the passage of time we learn from our past, we learn from our mistakes and continously improve ourself. Indeed we also improve or social life through our past experience.
there is a japanese term refers to the continious improvements in business life called Kaisen and i see that the continious improvements measn appliying and initiating new enhancments even in business(new education, new production volume, new technique, new invention, ....) or in social life (education, sticking to ethics rahter than negligence, avoiding mistakes,...)
Continuous improvement is a subjective term: to define in Business terms as NEW business relationship and development (every week/month).
In social life, more friends and business relationship turns to social friends, connected and open with family, relatives and friends.
Improving your business through extra cirricular activities outside your job through social gatherings is a very powerful tool . It gives you the chance to break the ice between you and the client. Thus building stronger ground base for the future interactions.

if I can understant your question in this order I have to say that improvement in business means that you will have much less ttime for your social life.
Now in this situation you could keep your time management very strickly and preciesly adapt your social life. It is true that you will not be out of your previous style of life but the people around you will the new one for you. You spend many hours with them and this is the price that you will have to pay.
But I believe you are strong and creative guy and if you are success in one area you will be in the other one too.
