Six Sigma is a management philosophy developed by Motorola that emphasizes setting extremely high objectives, collecting data, and analyzing results to a fine degree as a way to reduce defects in products and services. The Greek letter sigma is sometimes used to denote variation from a standard. The philosophy behind Six Sigma is that if you measure how many defects are in a process, you can figure out how to systematically eliminate them and get as close to perfection as possible. In order for a company to achieve Six Sigma, it cannot produce more than3.4 defects per million opportunities, where an opportunity is defined as a chance for nonconformance.

There are two Six Sigma processes: Six Sigma DMAIC and Six Sigma DMADV, each term derived from the major steps in the process. Six Sigma DMAIC is a process that defines, measures, analyzes, improves, and controls existing processes that fall below the Six Sigma specification. Six Sigma DMADV defines, measures, analyzes, designs, and verifies new processes or products that are trying to achieve Six Sigma quality. All Six Sigma processes are executed by Six Sigma Green Belts or Six Sigma Black Belts, which are then overseen by a Six Sigma Master Black Belts, terms created by Motorola.

Six Sigma proponents claim that its benefits include up to50% process cost reduction, cycle-time improvement, less waste of materials, a better understanding of customer requirements, increased customer satisfaction, and more reliable products and services. It is acknowledged that Six Sigma can be costly to implement and can take several years before a company begins to see bottom-line results. Texas Instruments, Scientific-Atlanta, General Electric, and Allied Signal are a few of the companies that practice Six Sigma.

Six Sigma is a set of strategies, techniques, and tools for process improvement. Itwas developed by Motorola in1986 Six Sigma became famous when Jack Welch  made it central to his successful business strategy at General Electric in1995. Today, it is used in many industrial sectors.  Six Sigma at many organizations simply means a measure of quality that strives for near perfection. Six Sigma is a disciplined, data-driven approach and methodology for eliminating defects (driving toward six standard deviations between the mean and the nearest specification limit) in any process – from manufacturing to transactional and from product to service.

Six Sigma used to improve the quality of process outputs by identifying and removing the causes of defects (errors) and minimizing variability in manufacturing and business processes It uses a set of Quality management  methods, including statistical methods  and creates a special infrastructure of people within the organization . Each Six Sigma project carried out within an organization follows a defined sequence of steps and has quantified value targets, for example: reduce process cycle time, reduce pollution, reduce costs, increase customer satisfaction, and increase profits.

The fundamental objective of the Six Sigma methodology is the implementation of a measurement-based strategy that focuses on process improvement and variation reduction through the application of the six sigma application project..

Six sigma allows you to make drastic improvements in your processes and allows you to focus on customer needs.

Created by Bill Smith of Motorola back in1987 as a way to reduce the number of defects in manufacturing processes, it has grown into a tool that can be used in any type of organization.

Six Sigma allows you to identify what the base issue is in your processes when the problem and solution are not known.

Process sigma can easily be calculated using a Six Sigma calculator. The fundamental objective .... you are so right. i work for TYCO under 6-sigma , and all what you said is so true .

Six sigma - a methodology arrived out of Statistical theories merger with problem solving process has become a wonderful tool to resolve problems. Assumption that every process in an organization depicts Normal distribution in its totality and six sigma can be adopted for every business process, made Six sigma being practiced as a philosophy in many organizations.

Ultimate aim of six sigma is to identify variation in the process and look at solution with the use of statistical tools (which are made easy to use with many user friendly softwares). As the whole process is very systematic and has provision to evaluate existence of errors in the problem solving process itself, it has tremendous power to give break through results.

It always helped me to resolve tough to crack problems.
