Importance depends on the company goals and objectives. The certificate testifies the level of reliability and quality  of company, a minimum level that gives an opportunity to enter the market. It is external independent confirmation of achievement of requirements of standard. I'd say it is an important consideration for any company for it gives an opportunity to affect  not only the internal foundations but also the external market, making more competitive bids and providing qualitative result for potential clients and partners.

Regarding «why»:

- only under the direction of really high requirements and qualities it is possible to get an optimal result as excellent goods (for lower cost) and/or growing quality of the providing services.

- production becomes efficient and optimized.

- qualification of management (people) grows, which gives best control over quality of all production or/and provided services.
