The employee's work and knowledge determine his value.  The skills attained during training on the job shows his will power to be professional in his outlook and perform his job with the knowledge of his past projects ( the methods that work with different task displays his confidence level to share the skills helping another person on the job) and helping the company as well. 

It build the reputation for the company to have knowledgeable staff.  He grows in leaps and bounds achieving  successs for the company and bringing people in the company closer to excellence. 

The growth rate of success and profits within the company helps the leaders to share bonus and awards for this excellence.  Promotions to higher posts within the company.

Both determine their value because when the employee has a great knowledge but his job is low, his real value is not shown here. In contrast, when his job is high and his knowledge is low, there are problems for this.
