there are many ways to make employee appreciated. but the best one is to get the employee to realize that he/she add something to the organization that no one else can.

There are diffrent ways of making employees "feel appreciated" such as performance interviews (always to make two-way viz employee-manager than one way), and creative and positive performance feedback to employee.
Another way is while making TNA, instead of manager deciding the training courses discuss with employee and honor his views as he is the first person know his strength and weakness than anyone else.
Further, during performance increment or bonus or incentive awards a manager need to call employee and brief him on company financial situation and performance and then mention about the salary progress. Employee will definitely appreciate such move from his manager more than the monetary benefits. Also the increment/incentive memo be personally handed over rather than through secretaries or coordinators
Even during business turbulences and employees find hard to cope with hike in cost of living etc, the manager can coordinally meet and discuss with employees and hope improvements in future and things go better. These acts would be appreciated by employees as he would get a feel that manager is conscious and aware of employees situations
Employee engagement is another constructive methode as out of work employee will have lots of personal skills in sports and arts. Provided a source within work to exhibit and nourish them by direct managers that will go beyond words of appreciation
Even a manager involved Exit interview can turn things 360D reverse on the decision to leave the company that depends on soroundings

In very Simple word a Manager can appreciate and motivate his/her employee in very simple way first Manager need to show his interest and let employees feel that they are the activity owner , you are the strategic advisor and let your employee know that you really trust them and ready to help & guide if any difficulty arise rather than scolding and let them feel down ,very simple funda to keep staff motivated trust your staff and appreciate them for good in front of all and once you feel they are out of track call individually and guide them as guardian rather than manager .
