is HTML5 a better tool than flash/actionscript?

I keep on hearing that it will replace actionscript in the near future. I'm curious of why will it. What are some of the things that HTML5 has an advantage over actionscript. Technical and coding details are appreciated!

We can't say that one of them is "better" than the other.
The issue is not about which is better, but about which will prevail.
The strong trend now in the web development community is to adopt open, standardized, and plugin-free web.
Which is usually expressed using the umbrella term: HTML5.
So, you shouldn't wonder which is better or more powerful.
Flash is a great platform and development environment, but it's eclipsed by this new trend.
Bottom line is: Learn HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript if you are new to web development.
Flash still has strong presence, but is losing ground everyday.
(What applies to Flash in this answer applies to Silverlight too)

Well, both have pros and cons, and you'd need to make an informed decision about which one to use in which scenario.
Flash/ActionScript is a proprietary commercial product.
True, most browsers have it installed, but many don't.
Just think of the majority of your mobile customers.
However, you'd be confident that your content will work uniformly across browsers.
On the other hand, HTML5 is very easy to pick, just and you're done! However, it is not supported across all browsers (but improving) and different browser vendors may have different implementation.

Simply, HTML5 is standard, flash is not.
Once browsers all browsers support HTML5, everything done in Flash will be done in HTML5 to make users avoid downloading an extra plugin like Flash.

HTML5 is not able at all right now to replace Action Script, so the question is not really accurate.

Adobe himself shifting their focus more on HTML5 hence stopped the development of mobile version of flash player and thanks to Apple who took it first and could see the potential of HTML5 in early days and that's where fight began.
I personally used to be a Flash Developer in my early days but even in that time, there was not much demand and gradually it picked up because of AS2/AS3 and rising of other Flash ecosystem's like Flash Comm Server indeed that was the good start.
And then HTML5 comes into the picture with tons of speculations and picked up the pace because of lots of companies i.e.
Google, Opera etc.
shown the interests.
And now do know there is another debate going on which is HTML5 vs.
Native (Objective-C/Core Java) apps, the debate would would be continuing.
The crux is, look at the bigger picture with all pros and cons in hands, you would know the answer yourself.

HTML5 is definitely better than Flash, as you does not need any additional plugin to run your script. Flash content is no more supported by iOS devices, it's a completely different discussion about why they dumped it. By using HTML5 with other great Javascript tools like node.js you can achieve anything like web browser games, chat integration, smooth website animations, offline storage and lots more. In my humble opinion, HTML5 has lots of things to offer. You also have to digest this fact that HTML5 + Javascript Frameworks is the future of modern world programming, so keep yourself updated and go for the latest and stable technologies. Thanks.

The flash and HTML5 have the feature of including "audio" and "video" in a web page, and it is integrated vector graphics. The major difference is, in the case of flash " the programmer need to learn  action script for a graphical work " , but we can easily add with HTML5
