Big companies and startups alike sometimes operate at a loss. Both YouTube and Tesla for example have been operating at a net loss for years. What are some of the key tips to operating at a loss, especially at the beginning of a startup?
This usually is a temporary situation; your income is less than your expenditures. It happens from time to time especially during the early stages of a business venture, but it does not mean the end of a business as long as there are enough funds in the bank to cover for the losses. During that time, expenditures must be minimized in order to lessen the impact of this period. A review of the financials becomes essential to ensure that the loss period is minimized and to clearly understand the reason behind the loss (what is at risk). Once the weak point of the plan is found and mitigated, the business should level itself back to profitability. If the issue is not managed quickly, one must find ways to increase sales as soon as possible (there are a dozen ways to do that). If the latter is not achievable with ease, then one must seek advice to change the situation as soon as possible before the next drastic move(s).
Before you start a business you should prepare a feasibility study in order to know when you should start making money out of your business. In the worst case scenario, you should ensure 6 months funds to run the business without interruption. In case it is not a start-up business, the most important thing is the operating profit should be positive which means that you can run the business till u find a way to improve your sales. If the Operating profit is negative, you should make a SWOT analysis for the business to fix the problems & if you don't know how to do it, refer to experts who will help u in this regard.
