In simpler words: It is where you put yourself in the minds of others ..
It is a strategy that is related to the quality of the product the seller delivers, the packaging, the price, and the idea behind the product ( how it benefits the customer really ) .

I can say positioning is in two forms the first being physical in nuture which is making a product available in channels patronised by the customer segment and the second is done in the mind of the customers that is to associate a product with the customer segment so that customer know that it is their product through provision of benefits the segment is looking for.
Good day.
The term positioning mean in marketing this is the perception to the consumers will be marked our brand to our competing other brands in the market. Consumers will choose our brand than others just because we have the quality, assurance, reliable price and effective of our products than them.
Market positioning refers to the process of establishing the image or identity of a brand or product so that consumers perceive it in a certain way. The positioning of a brand or product is a strategic process that involves marketing the brand or product in a certain way to create and establish an image or identity within the minds of the consumers in the target market. Market positioning of a brand or product must be maintained over the life of the brand or product. Doing this requires ongoing marketing initiatives intended to reinforce the target market’s perceptions of the product or brand. For example, a car maker may position itself as a luxury status symbol. Whereas a battery maker may position its batteries as the most reliable and long-lasting. And a fast-food restaurant chain may position itself as a provider of cheap and quick standardized meals. A coffee company may position itself as a source of premium upscale coffee beverages. Then a retailer might position itself as a place to buy household necessities at low prices. And a computer company may position itself as offering hip, innovative, and use-friendly technology products.
to me, positioning would mean being at the right place at the right time and the product becomes/is the needed commodity for that community
It's the way you place your brand on the market so that it will be perceived in the way you want it to be perceived by your targeted customers, in comparison to your competition. You do this in a certain number of ways like: price, name, how and where you advertise etc.
