You can't cut corners when it comes to car maintenance otherwise you might risk shortening the car's life span thus hastening wear and tear by adapting unorthodox maintenance practices. Stick to manufacturer's maintenance manuals and consult it every step of the way until you're fully acquainted with it's requirements as regards tune-ups, adhering to the recommended spec's for engine oil, coolant, gear oil, power steering fluid. Other aspects that would require routine check-up/replacement/top-up are; oil & fuel filters, air filter, brake fluid, radiator, clean up clogged radiator fins, check hose for leaks, oil pans, brake lines & pads (nevermind, we now have effective wear detection system to replace brake lining/pads and many other systems too), check batteries, check circuits for blown up fuse, burnt harnesses & relay regularly. Perhaps you might want obtain & learn about car diagnosis pad (a hand held device) such as AUTEL MAXI IM, G-SCAN 2, AUTEL POWERSCAN they are easy to use, they are GUIs just like your smart phone. They'll automatically tell you the root cause of error message/alert you received on the master display on your dashboard or the reason for the worrying engine sound you've been hearing lately. They might be a little bit expensive but are worth it. Your car engine is just like a carriage horse. In the middle ages you can't afford to have your horse die on you in the woods simply because you remain indifferent to the vet's advice. My final advice, be religious to manufacturer's maintenance manuals. Here is a website which I think is a good repository of manuals of some global brands https://cardiagn.com. Always keep a toolbox, learn from pros and ask questions.
