We face that most when we come to pronounce , some are common and we use and reapeat , like

Women , for the first time when we come to pronounce sure we will pronounce in a wrong way.

Most words with silent letters may cause confuse ,(ough) in some words are different in pronounciation like plough , though , there is a difference sure in pronouncing although they are ending with the same letters ,also character, we dont use it as ch here in pronouncing but in a different way as k .

We all go back to dictionaries to get the right pronounciation although some words may seem easy to pronounce.

thanks a lot.

Not quite the same thing, but interesting nevertheless, there is a Scottish town: Hawick (Har-wick) and it is pronounced "HOICK".

Lieutenant -  pronounced LOO-TENANT to the Americans and LEF-TENANT to the rest of the world!

Tomato - pronounced TOM-ATE-O to the Americans and TOM-ART-O to the rest of the world!

Anything beginning PSY - psychiatrist, psychologist, psychic etc etc, the "p" being "silent".
