Why do you think some people accuse PR of being the same as propaganda? What arguments would you present against this point of view?

I think this view point comes from bad PR.

The line between PR and propaganda gets fairly blurry at times but the two are completely different in approach though the goal might be similar.

The ultimate goal of both PR and Propaganda is for an opinion, view, product or service to be viewed in good light and both are aimed at soliciting a specific opinions from the target audience…

However, any PR exec worth their salt will know that misleading and biased information will leave them jobless and potentially without a future in the PR industry.

 

This is where the primary difference between the two becomes clear. Propaganda, by nature is biased and misleading. Due to its nature propaganda is reliant on the ignorance of its audience. In a well-informed, socially active and communicative society propaganda will never work for any stretch of time.

 

In contrast to this, good PR will fuel society, naturally propagate through societal nodes and garner respect from the target audience. PR lasts because it's meant to be collaborative communication between business and audience. NOT one way biased influence as with propaganda.
