it is the model devolped by ISO and it is arefrence model . that consist of7 layers .we use OSI model for troupleshooting and understanding what is really happens in our network.
the model that is acculy implementes in our devices is TCP/ip.
Please remember this is just a reference framework which has never been implemented as is.
Though several models are implemented on the basis of this framework.
This model is a product of ISO. It wil definately help in understanding and troubleshooting.
Why this framework was not implemented is because ISO had condition that whosoever implement this model, must implement it all7 layers.

Its hard one person to do all the jobs, therefore work has been divided to7 fucntions when dilivering an application from one computer to another, first we must have a media thats
the physical layer Wire , Fiber or Wirless,
then data link layer take care of data transfer in a link
(Link is a path between switch to a switch or switch to a router)
Network layer really means communcation between router to router as you know router is the boundary of the network
transport layer make sure similar to data link layer that the data trafer is accurate by TCP/IP
Session layers job is to manage connection users etc
presentation layer handles data types screen formats and provide required information for the application to work properly
application layer handles the essence of the work required by a computer applcation such as MS applications or Game or any other
why we have all these layers because we cannot simply send application to the other computer
simply used a technique in troubleshooting...
The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model (ISO/IEC7498-1) is a conceptual model that characterizes and standardizes the internal functions of a communication system by partitioning it into abstraction layers. The model is a product of the Open Systems Interconnection project at the International Organization for Standardization(ISO).
The model groups similar communication functions into one of seven logical layers.
physical layer
data link layer
network layer
transport layer
session layer
presentation layer
application layer
