I can understand that there are tasks that are under the responsibility of Asst Manager, but it cannot be all tasks, this would mean that you are not truly the manager, but a resource called a manager, probably that would be temporary, but that needs to be discussed as soon as the line manager asks you to do that, and ask to place a timeline to handover these tasks back to your role as a manager. Though, this needs to be treated delicately so that you would not give wrong impressions and eventually lose out with your subordinates and manager.

Ofcourse one can take growth in our professional life through our learning expereince and also the political shit plays with our juniors and seniors.  What i can advise is we have to work under any environment until we get command on each and every cyle.  Once we get confidence and powerful skills every body will come to us and try to gain knowledge.

This is very unusual but there must be some reason if the line manager is asking for this. To maintain the organizational discipline I will act accordingly, but in the course of time if I find no valid reason for that I will definitely raise my concern and will resign the job if not addressed accordingly.

Perhaps the expectation would be reporting directly to the manager, but you are what the manager wants you to be be. If this troubles you it shouldn't, because many of us live the same situation.

Without going into much detail if I am a good manager, I would first ask for the organisation structure, reporting structure and adhere with the same. Its highly unlikely for any company to have a reporting line as mentioned in the question.
