This is the digital world and there are different projects depending on campaigns that can be demonstrated on different topices. here is one example;

Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility (CPSR) was a global organization promoting the responsible use of computer technology. CPSR was incorporated] in1983 (following discussions and organizing that began in1981). It educated policymakers and the public on a wide range of issues. CPSR incubated numerous projects such as Privaterra, the Public Sphere Project, EPIC (the Electronic Privacy Information Center), the21st Century Project, the Civil Society Project, and the CFP (Computers, Freedom and Privacy) Conference. Originally founded by U.S. computer scientists at Stanford University and Xerox PARC, CPSR had members in over30 countries on six continents. CPSR was a non-profit501.c.3 organization registered in California.

It really depends on the project.
  If I'm working on a SEO campaign, I'd almost definitely get a good rank tracker, install web analytics, and so on.
If it's a PPC campaign, a tracker is a must, some excel sheets to track ad copies, etc.
If it's a Facebook campaign, a tracker and some folders for saving the images and sheets for ad copies.
So yeah, it really depends.
