You probably tell him this is similar to what you see in video games but with realistic things rather than fictitous. For example, no flying dragons :)
DCS is like a mother who manages in and outs of home grossory items then finally reporting father for action taken and event logging of problems.
you would describe to the child that dcs is a man with many brains unlike us who have only1 in the head he has1 for every part of his body
Any child who watched THE SIMPSONS will know that HOMER SIMPSON is a DCS OPERATOR at a nuclear power plant. Watch the program with the child and point out what he does at work. :)
Start with simple control such as a person turning on and off a light.
Then explain that the light will stay on or off until a person changes the condition.
Explain this is wasteful if left on when no one is there and not helpful if lights are off when dark and arriving home.
Then explain that a computer can do all this automatically, every day7 days a week.
A computer can look at the light level outside, whether someone is walking around the home or walking to the door from outside. It can then turn on and off the light automatically and even make it look like someone is home when they are not (for security).
Now expand this idea to cover everything that can be controlled in a home, a business and factories.
Lighting, heating, cooling, ventilation. HVAC and R.
Explain that DCS is just a clever computer, with an adjustable program and can have graphics and be connected to the internet so you can see it from anywhere in the world.
With proper integration it can even feed video to your graphics and record it, so you can watch what you and it controls.
DCS is not just a toy, but useful, energy and cost saving and good for the environment.
