I agree on the basis that this is done according to specific controls such as the taking than to them Qualification for it, but not on the basis of beauty and nepotism unlawfully.
Yes it is indeed required a resource to maintain the higher ups offices as a point of contact.

If the purpouse of this question was to make a sexist discusion so you can have a lot of comments than i understand why you would ask it. Questioning man hood, authority or personal skills on the basis of gender or position is just dull. I will not give you10 page discusion on things you already know. There are some very nice respons above mine and they explain it all. And yet i dont see the purpouse of your question.

i beieve we all need qualified organized help that organizes the daily activities .man or woman no difference as long as they are qualified.
i personally prefere a secretary with experience in office organization,proactive management and relationship development.
The measure of any job is the competency not male or female.
It is important for the top management to have assistants to handle all their matters, in order to enable them to focus on matters which are non- routine, complicated and requires a lot of analysis after discussing with the concern parties.
The looks should be the last or of no priority, when selecting individuals for such a job, as there is no point in selecting someone who is good looking, but does not have the analytical ability to represent the management in a right manner, which is required when working in higher positions.
For eg: A person assisting a CEO should have the ability to handle matters on the level of the CEO, since she will have to deal with all aspects of business, just like the the CEO. Therefore, if his female assistant who is good looking, is unable to cope up with the pressure and analyse matters according to the priority, may prove to be a liability.
Just take the statistics of success which lasted on long term basis in the past. Was it the looks or the ability of the person which helped in the growth and success. The past has proved that it was based on hardwork and proper analysis of problems to yield results, since all were working towards the same goal.
Depending on the mind set of the Manager hiring his assistant, this is where he will be a success or failure when handling his responsibilities.
Unless you are a model or an actress or working in such industries, where looks are the basis of growth in business, it is not wise to select an incapable person with good looks.
All persons should have proper personal hygiene. This should not be confused with being good looking.
Generally, females are capable of handling such posts, due to their ability to multi-task jobs according to priority, are quick learners and organised, which is the most important requirements for this job.
It is no wonder there was a wise saying, "Appearances are deceiving" or "Don't judge a book by it cover". Both these saying are informing us that we should not base anyone on appearance or outward look, as you might lose gems or people with the right skills which meet your needs.
Everybody needs assistant in somewhere or another even secretaries who have load of work do need receptionists to reply on the phone or even typists to do some kind of typing so what do you think about management who have so different works to be done especially GM who is dealing with everything in the company so diffently he or she will need an expert assistant.
Professional and serious managers don't insist on gender or nice looking but they will insist on experience and fulfilling duties in smart and fast way without mistakes or even need to be trained.
You need someone for paper work as well as scheduling since there will be a little time for these tasks.
Yes they require assistants to handle certain tasks to maintain smooth flow of his responsibility. But they need hard worker for this . It should hardly matter if they are male or female.
I agree to the fact that senior management do require assistants based on which they can have a point contact considering the large audience that they cater to and liaise with on a daily basis.
Females are more managed than males in general. You may find females in Top Management and their assistant is also female BUT I would not deny the fact that their is also tempation for men to have beautiful women as their assistant.
