For Quantity Surveying we should know about Microsoft Excel. We can take quantity only from drawings, so that purpose we should know how to use AutoCAD.These two software packages are enough.

Depending on the industry you are working in, there are several different software programs that can help.

In Civils, there is BIM, which is a 'building information modelling'.  This is essentially an intelligent 3D model, which can provide MTOs based on what has been modelled.

In Oil and Gas, a common tool, which can be utilised by the QS, is PDMS.  This is a piping design software, which is used to create the piping system on a module or plant.  The benefit of this to the QS is that it can run off an MTO for you to transfer into you BOQ>

For structural steel works, there is a program called Staad modelling, which structural engineers will use to create the steel frame.  again this produces an MTO.

Final, and most vital piece of software to remember is... EXCEL!
