Some people do personal work of their boss, is it part of the work or try to BUTTER your boss for favors?

As you do something for him/her you also expect something in return. So please share views.

It’s a bitter truth. Although it is not ethical or totally un professional. There is a little acceptance if it is done only for the sake of courtesy. And if the intention is just to do it only for the sake of a help rather to get some advantages from Boss.

In short a professional do not need such tactics.

if you are a qualified professional you will not treat your boss differently than any other coleague.

i belive you should treat him with respect and help out when needed but not over do it.

being helpfull is key.but don't over do it.that is extremely degrading and unprofessional.

If the bos delegate the tasks to specific employee who has competencies to do, then it is a part of management.

Otherwise, it is anything you can describe

If your bosse's requests are not big and do not involve any anti moral or too personal favours than it's no problem to have them done especially if they requir your oppinion. Some times it is a part of your job to help your boss in his/her personal actions and tasks but others it is very unappropriate. Depends on your position/ relation with your boss and type of task.

This is clearly a butter polish and those people who do these type of activities decrease the importance of hard worker . Usually some of bosses like butter polish and also the employees who do this.

I see that it is part of th work to support everyones success and that includes the boss. On the other hand I usually take any opprotunity given to me by my boss to do some of his/her work and I see that this is good for my development rather than buttering him/her for a favour. He/she can probably get any colleague to do the job.

Well I think it all burns down to this

OFFICE ARITHMETIC

Smart boss + smart employee = profit

Smart boss + dumb employee = production

Dumb boss + smart employee = promotion

Dumb boss + dumb employee = overtime

The2nd and3rd option.

If the Boss is smart he gets his work done.

If the Employee is smart he gets his work done through pleasing the Boss.

The Bossess and Employees in the1st option will hardly come across situations as you have mentioned.

First of all, no personal work is a part of the duty of any employee, since the organisation is not paying its people for handling personal work during office hours and it is not the responsiblity of any individual to do somebody's personal work outside office hours.

If you have noticed such matters, it is due to the following3 situations between the individuals involved :-

1)   Competent Manager + Competent Subordinate = Rare phenomenon (as they are able to handle the personal and professional matters separately and efficiently).  You will see that the Manager assigns the subordinate to co-ordinate handling personal matters with the office boy or the driver to handle his personal matters, while on the way to handling officials jobs.  This way, the subordinate handles the job, but is not disturbed from handling official duties, when handling such matters.  Also, in this situation, the subordinate need not worry or is expected to do personal favours in order to receive a good appraisal from his Manager, since the Manager is competent and will base his decision on fair judgement.

2)   Incompetent Manager (who wants to show he is in-charge) + Incompetent subordinate (who is looking for ways to strengthen his position and to cover up his incompetence) = Everytime.

3)   Incompetent Manager + Competent subordinate (who is looking for favours in return from his incompetent manager) = Everytime.

So, in other words, if an employee is buttering his manager for personal favours, it is due to the incompetence of the Manager, who encourages such behaviour, as he is unable to manage his personal and professional life efficiently and keep it separate.
