Why do we use subnet mask? What are its uses?

Subnet Mask used to determin the Network part and the Host part within the IP Address

Subnetmask is use to isolate the network ID and Host ID. eg- if an IP is:192.168.0.1 then the default subnet is:255.255.255.0 because it is a C Class Address C Class Add. have3 network octate and1 host octate .The main purpose of subnetmasking is to reduce the broadcast domain or in other words to reduce to heavy network traffic.

Submask mask is used to divide an IP address into network and node, and the limit the number of IP addresses available on a network.

An IP address of the form255.0.0.0 (1 number for network,3 for node) is called a Class A network An IP address of the form255.255.0.0. (2 for network,2 for node) is called a Class B An IP address of the form255.255.255.0 (3 for network,1 for node - most common) is called a Class C network.

We need a subnet mask for IPv4 addresses because the address doesn't give any information on the network size. Class sizes are not the network sizes. In practical networks all IPv4 networks are broken up into subnets that are smaller than the class size.

For example you could break up the class C network200.200.200.0/255.255.255.0 into two smaller networks (potentially at separate locations)200.200.200.0/255.255.255.128 and200.200.200.128/255.255.255.128 assuming neither needed more than126 hosts. In reality most companies only get enough IPv4 addresses for the servers that need to be on the public Internet. I've personally seen set ups with32,16, &8 address networks (that would be masks of255.255.255.224,255.255.255.240, &255.255.255.248 respectively)
